Podcast review: New Parents

The Scummy Mummies Podcast

This highly relatable podcast for new parents knows that parenting is more sticky fingers and potty training accidents than gifted children and sleeping for eight hours a night has been recording for almost ten years. Ellie Gibson and Helen Thorn interview experts, authors and celebrities about their parenting experiences and how to be a good enough parent, not a perfect parent. The podcast also addresses relationships with your partner and your post-pregnancy body, through light-hearted and funny but honest discussions with their guests. There are also many episodes on different routes to parenthood, blended families and LGBTQ+ parenting.

Mom and Dad are Fighting

Happy Mum, Happy Baby

An ever popular podcast hosted by Giovanna Fletcher that interviews public figures from popstars, to actors, to politicians, to the British Royal family about their parenting life. Although the podcast is perhaps not as hard hitting or in depth as others that are available, it’s a nice conversational listen that provides some insight into other parents’ experiences. More recently the podcast has taken a slightly different angle and been dedicating episodes to parenting charities and parenting experts, but still with an accessible character.

Crib Notes: Things Parents Google at 3am

A health podcast presented by Rick Kelsey and Dr Sarah Blackstock, in each episode the pair discuss medical issues that new parents are often concerned about, such as nutrition, baby development and vaccinations. This podcast covers the concerns that parents, especially with their first child, can worry about and can help you understand what’s normal and when to seek some extra support.

The Modern Dads Podcast

Specifically for dads, this podcast produced by the City Dads Group that has communities across the US, discusses what it means to be a father in the modern world. It particularly focuses on areas that are not commonly discussed like grief and loss of a child, mental health and talking to your children about consent. There are also episodes to help with raising transgender children, neurodiverse children and how to be a feminist dad. This podcast is great for fathers who want an active involvement in their children’s social development but are worried about getting it wrong.
